BLURB
Hyphema: Bleeding in the eye caused by trauma… Matt Garratti, a paramedic from New York, moves his wife and son to North Carolina to work at his dream job as a flight medic. Pakistani born Sudah, his wife, receives frosty stares and insensitive comments from their new neighbors… Matt wonders if he is pursuing his dream or bringing his family into a nightmare from which they may never wake.
WHEN I WROTE HYPHEMA
When I wrote Hyphema I started with a character and a premise…
You see Matt Garratti was created in my novel Final Sin, he was best friends with the novel’s heroine and paramedic partner. I had built a touch of angst into his character as a sort of “red herring”; it worked because some readers thought he might be the villain and wondered about him up until the real bad guy was disclosed. Meanwhile by the conclusion of Final Sin I had been left with a multi-dimensional character, some dreams, some insecurities and an immigrant wife he loved. How can a writer just put a character like that to rest?
In Hyphema Matt has moved on from his New York origins. He moved his family to North Carolina where he now works as a flight medic. Not everyone is happy with his wife’s Pakistani ethnicity or her Muslim faith, though, and when strange things happen to threaten their domestic bliss the authorities suspect prejudice. Well, telling you anymore would be a definite spoiler, you’ll just have to find out for yourself. In Hyphema, author Chelle Cordero meets headlong a number of real problems facing her characters. She doesn't sugar-coat cultural differences and prejudice. The series of incidents and the deaths faced by Matt and Sudah cause them to face these problems and gives the love story a depth well-done. --Janet Lane Walters
Ms. Cordero tackles such amazingly current topics-hate, prejudice, fear of the different, with such enjoyable, suspenseful, and well-researched background, that this reader will be following her closely to see what she writes next. Each medical scene resonates with reality, and each chapter flows into the next with a flutter in the pit of the stomach for what is coming, as well as what has been. --Brian Davidson

Since I was dealing with a culture and faith I was not familiar with, I had a lot of research to do. I’ve always enjoyed learning about other religions so the research was not unpleasant. I also lucked out when I found I knew a good acquaintance whose background was similar to the one I was researching; I had never asked his faith before and was mistaken about his ethnicity. I also read about many of the post 9/11 sentiments, all “sides”, as well as the naturalization process for immigrants. Research for this book was definitely an eye-opener.
Of course I enjoyed writing the action scenes in Hyphema since they involved so much of 9-1-1 medical response. I’ve been a (volunteer) NYS Emergency Medical Technician for the past 25+ years and I come from a family of vollie and career EMS professionals. Many of the little EMS stories and the camaraderie between crew members came from personal (or borrowed from family) experiences. A friend of mine, a former military flight medic, “lent” me some of his views and knowledge to help make Matt’s perspective more realistic. The EMS response in Hyphema is real and, as a bit of an adrenaline junkie, I believe, truly exciting.

What an interesting theme!! You don't see too many Muslim main characters. But it's so current for what's going on today.
Good luck with your book!!
