Blogging From A to Z Challenge - Z

This will be a walk down memory lane, so to speak. The majority of the books I will be blogging about were acquired during my son's childhood. I will be blogging about children's, MG, and Tween books that are on the bookshelves, with a few being found on the Kindle for PC. The titles will either have words that correspond with the letter of the day, will be on a topic that corresponds with the letter of the day or both. As I'm finding a couple of the letters a bit challenging, I may need to borrow a book or two from the library to complete the challenge.

Today is Monday, April 30th.  It is the 26th day of the Blogging From A to Z Challenge.  Today's word is Zombie.  Today's letter is Z.

The Funniest Excuse Book Ever

by Maureen Kushner

Illustrated by Sanford Hoffman

Genre: Humor

Paperback, Published September 1999

What?  According to my challenge theme, this post is suppose to include a word that starts with the letter X?  Well ... I do have a few excuses as to why I don't have a book with an X word in the title.

1. My dog ate the only book I had with an X word in the title.

That excuse might work if I had a dog.

2. I forgot that there was an X in the alphabet.

That excuse might work if I were three years old and still learning my A-B-C's.

3. I kept forgetting to go to the library to look for a book with an X word in the title.

That excuse is the truth.  But will you, the reader, accept it?

Okay.  I know.  I know.  I'm really stretching things a bit, aren't I?  What can I say?  I did use the letter X throughout the post.  ; )

Thanks for stopping by and have an excellent day!

Usborne Cookery School
Pasta & Pizza For Beginners

Author:  Fiona Watt

Inside this book you will find a lot of wonderful recipes and each one has a picture of the finished dish.  The step-by-step directions of each recipe are very easy to understand.

Since this is a book for beginners, there are step-by-step directions for cutting onions, garlic, and mushrooms.  Included is a picture of different types of pastas, each one labeled as to what they are, and directions on how to cook them.

Would you like to make spaghetti alla carbonara or pasta with green vegetables?  Perhaps you'd rather make a Chicago pizza pie or hot apple pizza?  There are recipes for these and much more.

My son and I have made the meatballs in tomato sauce and the mini pizzas.

Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants

by Dav Pilkey

My son had read and collected several of the Captain Underpants books.  He told me this particular book had been one of his favorites.

What's not to like about this book?  It mentions underpants (which makes young kids giggle when saying it out loud) and there is a Professor whose last name is Poopypants (another word that makes kids giggle).  It is hilariously comical and appeals to young kids.

QUESTION OF THE DAY:  What is your favorite kind of pizza?

 Silent Observer

Written and Illustrated by Christy MacKinnon

We bought this book at a used book sale that my son's elementary school had.

I must admit that this is one of those books that has sat on our bookshelf for years without us ever reading it.  My son never showed an interest in it and we had so many other books that I guess I never gave it the time needed to read it.

I recently took the time to read Silent Observer and found it to be an interesting book about the author and her early years as a deaf child.  She lost her hearing in 1891, at the age of two, from a bout of "Winter Fever."

As a child, Christy loved to explore the farm she lived on.  Christy, her brothers and her sisters all had daily chores.  There was much happiness and joy, but there was also sadness.  Their mother died while giving birth and a sibling died from typhoid fever.

Although this book is written and illustrated by the author, Christy MacKinnon, it was not put together until years later, after her death in 1981.  Ms. MacKinnon's niece, Inez MacKinnon Simeone completed the manuscript and the layout of the book in September 1992.

QUESTION OF THE DAY:  Do you know what "Winter Fever" is?

(You will find the answer to the above question in the first comment box below.)
